"Rum emerges as the cause - and supposed cure - for many illnesses and injuries at sea."

"On the same voyage, a scorpion sting nearly paralysed a sailor. He was revived by 'application of rum to the part'. Another man bitten by a tarantula received some 'rum and oil'."

  1. Great quote. I'd love to know more about the history of rum.

By the way, any rum recs for Dark and Stormy's that are a bit different? Would love to update that drink a bit.

  2. You know Tom Gjelten wrote an interestiing book called Bacardi and the Long Fight for Cuba. You might want to check that out.

I recently found a rum from Hawaii called Kōloa Kaua`i Dark. I thought about getting a bottle and trying a new D&S with it. I'll let you know if I toy with that. You should also check out the Rusty Root on this blog - it's basically a D&S subbing the rum for Root liqueur.
